A Study onthe Spatial Distribution of Geography Doctorate Granters in China

  • This paper firstly analyzed and contrasted the bit sequence of Geography Doctorate granters of the first-class discipline of geography and its second-class disciplines among Chinese Provinces(Municipalities, Autonomous regions), including, in 2009 and 2011, that is, the year before and after the release of the document of degree 2011 No. 8, and secondly China was zoned into seven Regions to study the nature of the equilibrium distribution of Geography Doctorate granters, and thirdly the spatial concentration degree was measured by provincial doctorate granter--population Lorenz Curves and Gini Index in China. Studies have shown,(1)in 2009, in terms of the number of doctorate granting institutions of Geography, there was a high spatial concentration degree in China in general, with Beijing, Jiangsu, Gansu having the highest spatial concentration of geography doctorate granters, the North China, the Yangtze River Delta Region, Northwest Region having a relatively high concentration and the Northeast Region, Central Region, Southern Region in medium level of concentration and the Southwest Region in the lowest level of concentration among the seven greater Regions.(2)in 2011, about the number of doctoral granting institutions of geography, there was a slight decrease in the concentration degree of spatial distribution compared with that in 2009 in China on the whole, greater increase is found in the North Region, Northwest Region than that in other Regions, one doctorate granter is added respectively in Northeast Region, Central Region, South Region, Southwest Region, and the number remained unchanged only in the Region of theYangtze River Delta. The influence of several factors was analyzed and suggestions for developing more geography doctorate granters in the southwest were put forth.
