Questionnaire Research into the Use of Primary Mathematics Textbooks

  • The Eighth Foundation Education Curriculum Reform advocates the idea of "teaching on textbooks instead of teaching textbooks". The new edition of primary school mathematics textbooks has been brought in use for more than a decade. By use of a teachers’ questionnaire issued by the Ministry of Education, 523 elementary school mathematics teachers are investigated in the Hexi District of Tianjin and the Jinshui District of Zhengzhou. The results showed the new textbook is characteristic of: a satisfactory reflection of the curricular standards of primary mathematics; an emphasis on the cultivation of innovative spirit and practical abilities in students; rich content with reasonable capacity; reasonable difficulty; excellent guiding force for teaching; a beautiful exterior appearance and nice publication service. And teachers in general accept the textbook, believing it is unique in many aspects and yet still there is room for improvement and put forward some constructive suggestions for further revision of the book.
