Influence of TANG Xianzu’s Operas on TU Shen’ Novels

From mid and late Ming Dynasty to mid Qing Dynasty, TANG Xianzu’s operas had witnessed their great influence on literature. And only in Qing Dynasty, many litterateurs were claimed to be TANG’s followers. The novelist TU Shen was one of them in Qianlong period. His collection of ghost stories Trivial Words in and out Liuhe was deeply influenced by Four Dreams of Linchuan. The two stories of the collection Mei Ziran and Liao Jiangwo were born out of TANG’s Peony Pavilion and Nanke Dream.
