Textual Research on Five Colloquial Terms from Archives of Nanbu County in Qing Dynasty

  • There are a large number of colloquial terms in the Qing Dynasty’s Archives of Nanbu County. The terms prevent modern readers from better reading and understanding of the archives of Nanbu County. Terms like gai lou, long dui, gun dang, jin po, and mo ta, are perplexing. After contextual analysis and references to related literatures, the meanings of the five terms mentioned above can be determined. Gai lourefers to altering contracts to evade taxes. Long duimeans vaguely accumulate. Gun dangdenotes evil companions. Jin posignifies all the slope soil. And mo tatranslates to delaying and obstructing (something).
