The Examination and Correction ofA Convincing Evidence by the Solid Tombstones:Textual Research into Texts on the Newly Discovered Epigraphs from Sui Dynasty

  • There are 163 newly discovered epigraphs from the Sui Dynasty in 2008 which have been included in A Convincing Evidence by the Solid Tombstones. The epigraphs provide important new materials for research in the Chinese history, culture, the spoken and written Chinese language of the Sui Dynasty. The overall interpretation and analysis of the texts in the book are of a high standard. However, there are still some issues of textual errors, such as missing entries due to damaged zi(Chinese characters), misinterpretation due to three reasons: unclear allusions, obscure meanings of words, and confusion caused by vernacular zi. This study offers suggestions for corrections and supplements to these textual errors based on Chinese graphology, lexicology, and textual criticism. It aims to provide beneficial references for the compilation of epigraphs from the Sui Dynasty.
