On Tragic Connotations of Cuicui and Tess

  • Cuicui in Border Town and Tess in Tess d’Urbervilles are both the tragic figures in the social bottom. As the representatives of truth, beauty and kindness, they are the ideal women for the writers’ description. They are fresh and pure, beautiful and kind, and natural and honest. The writers’ different thinking style and creation conceptions lead to the differences in their thoughts and tragic connotations.Cuicui is reserved and introverted. She has gone beyond the secular world and still keeps pure even in the filthy society. This has shown the writer’s reflection of the urban civilization.Nevertheless, Tess’ character is direct and fervent. She is the victim of the modern industrial civilization. She is forced to step to death by the cruel reality. This shows the writer’s criticism of the society.Their tragedies are out of limitation of their own characters and the social persecution.
