A Study of Features of“Self-replication” in ZHANG Daqian’s Painting

  • Most of ZHANG Daqian’s over30 thousand paintings are characterized by social engagement. The gigantic demand from the artistic market made him to replicate a great number of formulaic works. He once put forward the concept of professional painters, hoping to correct the painters’ satisfaction of the market and simple and rough painting style through the integration between literati’s cultivation and professional painters’ techniques. And his self-replicated works have reflected the reality his integration had to face: the commercialization of artistic market was the key factor on which ZHANG Daqian had to depend and for which he made his success as well as the main force to internalize his painting’s cultural value.
