The Beauty of Actors ofA Valuable book for Appreciating Flowers and the Scholars’ Attitude toward Them in Qing Dynasty ——— A Case Study of DU Qin-yan

  • DU Qin-yan is one of protagonists of the Qing novel A Valuable Book for Appreciating Flowers as well as a representative of actors. His beauty lies in his external appearance, expression and internal characters. His distorted personali- ty has increased his charm. Such distorted personality is due to scholars’expectation for his sexual identification as a female. Such expectation lead to the vagueness of the consciousness of his own sex. From CHEN Sen’ description of DU Qin-yan, we can find the scholars’ psychology of hunting for pedication with“dallying” as the core in Qing Dynasty.
