  • With Qing Dynasty as a boundary, the traditional studies of personal names can be divided into two phases. The studies before Qing Dynasty lacked the linguistic perspectives, and deep excavation of names' motivation and cultural connotations. Such studies mainly concentrated on the origin of the family names, naming etiquette and rules, family trees, nicknames, homonyms, etc.
