On Western Elements in ZHANG Da-qian's Painting WANG Ping

  • In his life, ZHANG Da-qian absorbed others' strengths, rooted in tradition but made continuous innovation. In addition to his adaptation of other masters' strengths, he made reference to the Western painting and combined it with its Chinese counterpart, and finally he pioneered the ink-splash painting with deep modern flavor. Through the solid evidence, this paper has made a brief analysis of some of ZHANG's masterpieces with Western influence in an attempt to probe into his attitude toward the Western art and his tackling of it in his creation. It is hoped that, through this case, we can have further understanding of modernization of Chinese painting and provide some inspiration for contemporary painting creation.
