Graphical Abstract
Abstract
Through the implicit and explicit description, the author, CAO Xue-qin, has connected Dai-yu with Suzhou closely. In his novel, a lot of things, such as the miss' birthplace, birthday, dialect, name, Xiaoxiang Lodge with many bamboos are all connected with Suzhou, and these imply and emphasize her Suzhou identity. In addition, quite a lot of story lines are developed around her and some places of the city. The author does so in an attempt to show her strong missing of her hometown, her filial piety to her parents and her real love for Baiyu. Meanwhile, the author has seemingly implied his own special feelings toward Suzhou when he designs Daiyu's identity and stories — he has concealed stories and experiences of Family CAO and their relatives Family LI, at the same time, he has expressed his yearning for the two families.
