Practical Significance of Rereading the Classical Masterpieces: A Perspective of Outlaws of the Marsh
Graphical Abstract
Abstract
In the trend of rereading classical masterpieces, we can find two doubts toward Outlaws of the Marsh: law violation and violence. Though the novel shows a kind of value orientation against the legality spirit on the narrative level, it tells us vividly the serious consequence brought by almost invalid laws in a society. Through the establishment of whole structure and ingenious arrangement of story lines, the novelist explicitly manifests the roots which lead to such legal invalidity and directs his criticism to the upper rulers. Meanwhile, through the negative influence on the people of lower class brought about by such invalidity, he also reveals the necessity and rationality that these outlaws struggle to seize the power with force. Hence the contemporary significance of the classical work Outlaws of the Marsh is displayed.
