On Five Similarities and Differences between A Journey to the West andA Legend of Deification
Abstract
There exist five similarities as well as five differences between A Journey to the West and A Legend of Deification. Firstly, they are both great works of myths, but the former preaches Buddhism, the latter Taosm. Secondly, the two novels are both works which are complementary of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. But the dominant doctrine of the former is the escape from the world, while that of the latter is the entry of the world. Thirdly, some figures like Nazha, YANG Jian, LI Jing and Muzha are in both works. But they play different functions in different novels. Fourthly, both works have borrowed poems or lyrics of speakers for description. But the former's borrowing seems a bit careless, while the latter's borrowing is vivid and exact. Fifthly, both novels belong to the cumulative works. But the former has successfully created artistic figures like SUN Wu-kong, ZHU ba-jie, SHA Wu-jing, Monk Tang, Ox King, princess iron fan, and etc., but for the latter, except Nazha and Bigan, the other figures are not so vivid and successful.
