A Grammatical and Pragmatic Analysis of the Structure “Numeral + Ge + Yi(Hundred Million)”
Graphical Abstract
Abstract
The combination of “yi(hundred million)” with “ge” leads to the structure “numeral + ge + yi(hundred million)” in modern Chinese. Based on an analysis from its grammatical features, we can find that this structure can be seen as the numeral-quantifier one. In form, it approaches to the one of “numeral + yi + noun / quantifier”. Moreover, the syntactical function of the two is similar. In spite of that, their difference lies in the fact that the former is more used in news text and is endowed with the pragmatic value of round number, integrity of the meaning of “yi” and the tone emphasis. Such linguistic phenomenon is brought about by the nature of “ge” and the integrity of the number “yi”.
