Abstract:Zhonghua zhengyin (standard Chinese) is the general term for textbooks of Chinese oral language from the late Joseon Dynasty. Up to now, four versions of the textbooks have been compiled domestically. In recent years, a new edition has emerged in Yeoulwoon Library at Yonsei University. These textbooks are written in the dialect of Northeast China. Therefore, substantial linguistic value could be found in the textbooks. Numerous phonetic characters and colloquial terms are documented in the textbooks which thus contain various unresolved expressions. These terms can be elucidated to some extent by utilizing historical and dialectal materials. The examination of terms such as bian nie, ku jie, zhao gu, li tou, and sheng lianserves as a concrete practice of this approach.
