Abstract:Lingyan Temple in Jinan, which is a renowned Zen temple from the Jin dynasty, acquired extensive land through allocations bestowed by the royal family and the cultivation efforts of monks within the land granted. Because the temple frequently encountered land property disputes, eminent monks made strenuous efforts to protect its property. It also often garnered support from the Jin government which afforded it advantages in those disputes. An investigation into several lawsuits concerning the temple’s land property during the Jin dynasty reveals the actual operation of the management system for land property and related regulations. The litigation cases involving the temple during the Mingchang Reign of Emperor Zhangzong not only reflect aspects of the judicial system in the Jin dynasty but also indirectly indicate that the Jin government’s management of temple economies varied according to the needs of the times.
